A speeding Blueline bus hit a motorist and crushed his head after he fell in west Delhi’s Punjabi Bagh on Wednesday, the police said.

Bystanders caught the bus driver when he tried to flee from the spot.

Businessman Surendra Kumar, 50, was on his way for some work when the mishap took place around 3.30 p.m. Kumar owns an auto parts business in Shakti Vihar and had left for Nangloi on his scooter, the police said. The accident took the toll of Blueline deaths this year to 109.

Kumar was passing through the Punjabi Bagh underpass when a Blueline bus hit his scooter from behind, the police said. Kumar lost control of his two-wheeler and fell off, the officer said.

“The bus driver, Vinod Kumar, didn’t stop even after the collision. He went on and ran over Surendra Kumar’s head. He died on the spot,” the officer said.

The bus, plying on route number 937 (from Old Delhi railway station to Sultanpuri), had passengers at that time.

Vinod Kumar allegedly tried to drive away but bystanders prevented him doing so and called the police, who arrested him.

“We have registered a case of rash driving and causing death due to negligence. He was not drunk,” said as police officer.

The bus has been impounded and an initial technical check shows that the bus was in acceptable working condition, the officer added.
