The Madhya Pradesh government on Friday informed the Supreme Court that though it had finalised German firm Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (M/s GIZ-IS) to dispose of more than 300 metric tonne of toxic waste at the Bhopal Gas Union Carbide accident site, it was yet to finalise the contract with the international agency.

In an affidavit, filed by MP’s counsel CD Singh, the state government claimed it had sought clarifications specially pertaining to the financial implications related to the project from the agency and was still awaiting its response.

The queries were raised following the submission of a draft contract by the company.

Through its last communiqué sent to M/s GIZ-IS on July 2, deputy secretary of the Madhya Pradesh government’s Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief and Rehabilitation Department (BGTRRD) has sought details of the company’s agreement of similar projects with other countries such as Tanzania and Nepal.
