A Congress MP from Uttar Pradesh (UP) has lodged a complaint with Delhi Police, alleging that his official letterhead was forged and used to send a letter to Union home minister P Chidambaram.

The letter, police said, was a recommendation for conferring the Padma Bhushan or Padma Vibhushan to music composer Bappi Lahiri.

The complaint was lodged at the economic offences wing (EOW) of the crime branch on Wednesday by Kamal Kishore, Congress MP from UP's Bahraich constituency. On the basis of his complaint, a case of cheating and forgery has been registered and investigations are under way.

According to a senior police officer, the matter came to fore when Kishore learnt that a recommendation letter in favour of Bappi Lahiri was sent to Chidambaram's North Block office by forging his letterhead.

"After learning about the fraud, Kishore wrote to the home minister to clarify that the recommendation letter recommending Bappi Lahiri for Padma Bhushan/Padma Vibhushan was written on his forged letterhead and his signatures were also forged. Understanding the seriousness of the matter, the home ministry forwarded the complaint to the crime branch, which verified the details of the complaint and registered a case," the senior officer said on condition of anonymity.

Though the MP could not be contacted for his comment despite repeated calls and text messages sent to his mobile phone, sources in the crime branch said the it was possible someone from his office had forged the paper. Meanwhile, Kishore has also requested the home minister to cancel the recommendation.

"We are questioning some people. Prima facie we suspect involvement of some insider(s). Our investigations are on,” added the officer.
