If you thought Khan Market was perfect the way it was, think again.
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has come up with a redevelopment plan for the high-end marketplace. The revamp entails an underground parking with a tunnel connecting it to the nearest Metro station. A mall and a multiplex are also in the works.
The NDMC is also planning to build emergency ramps on the second floor of the outer circle, an al fresco walking space in place of the current parking lot, a central AC plant and a common effluent treatment park.
“We have plans to have a centralised air conditioning plant, which will not only reduce the power consumption but also remove the eyesore that AC machines jutting out from individual establishments have become. A common effluent treatment plant — an environmentally sustainable and cost-viable system for the collection, treatment and discharge of effluents from the wastewater generating units — is also being planned,” a senior NDMC official told Hindustan Times.
The ramp on outer circle’s second floor will be constructed for emergency situations. “It will have two exit ramps to help people get out in an orderly manner. The architect’s office has already conducted a survey of the market including those of individual shops to understand the durability and strength of buildings,” he said.
An underground parking lot will solve the parking chaos at the 63-year-old Khan Market, which will be connected to the nearest Metro station. “The parking will stretch across the length and breadth of the market. It will be a huge compound with a tunnel to the Metro station and the whole facility will be totally safe,” the official said.
To boost nightlife, the council has plans to extend the last-order deadlines at eateries and watering holes in Connaught Place as well as Khan Market till 1am instead of the current 11pm.
However, traders of the country’s most expensive retail space are an apprehensive lot. The Connaught Place redevelopment project, which saw a series of missed deadlines and chaos, was on top of every trader’s mind when they talked about this project.
“We have been constantly in touch with the municipal council ever since the project was conceived in 2011. We don’t need another CP here,” said Arjun Kapoor, president of Khan Market Welfare Association.
