The preliminary autopsy report of Vanshika has revealed that she died of manual strangulation. Since the infant was found dead on the bed, under the fan from which Satyam was found hanging, police believe she first strangulated Vanshika and then chose to end her life on what was her last birthday.

V Renganathan, additional CP (west), said Satyam’s body was handed over to her family members from Bulandshahr (Uttar Pradesh) after the post-mortem, after which they took it for cremation.

“We have arrested Pawan for harassing Satyam for dowry and subjecting her to such level of harassment that she preferred to take the extreme step. We are in the process of recording the statements of neighbours to ascertain if Satyam was being harassed for dowry by her in-laws,” said Renganathan.

Asked if the police had been able to find the exact reason that prompted Satyam to take the extreme step, Ranganathan said Pawan’s interrogation revealed that the couple had a serious argument on the night before Satyam’s death over a family matter.

“Pawan said that their argument started over the issue that neither Satyam nor anybody from his family was sent to Bulandshahr to attend the naming ceremony of her elder brother’s child. After the argument, Pawan went to sleep in his mother’s room on the first floor,” said Renganathan.

On Friday morning, they found Satyam’s room bolted from inside. Not getting any response, the family broke into the room and found Satyam hanging from the ceiling fan and Vanshika lying unconscious on the bed.

Showing their unhappiness over the police investigation in the case, Satyam’s family members alleged that the police arrested only Pawan.

“My sister was being harassed by her in-laws too, but they have not been arrested. The police must arrest the entire family as all of them were involved in harassing my sister,” said Prashant, Satyam’s brother.
