To prevent waterlogging during monsoons, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has decided to relay 32 roads in its jurisdiction to prevent accumulation of water.
The Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) carried out a structural and functional evaluation, wherein it was suggested that resurfacing of certain major roads should be done in the NDMC area.
A proposal in this regard was tabled in the Council meeting of the civic body and was cleared by the members.
Some of the roads that will be relaid include Moti Lal Nehru Lane, Krishna Menon Marg, Parking at Ashok Hotel, side lane Kautilya Marg, Teen Murti Lane, Chandra Gupta Marg to Niti Marg, parallel road of Sardar Patel Marg, and a number of roads in the Diplomatic Enclave.
"A survey was first conducted by us to ascertain which all roads needed to be relaid. We had consulted the CRRI for this purpose as well. Tenders were called by us and it has been awarded to the firm which quoted the lowest amount," said a senior NDMC official.
According to NDMC officials, a number of roads that will be resurfaced used to get waterlogged during the rainy season and have not been relaid for quite some time now.
A number of roundabouts in the Diplomatic Enclave used to get submerged in water.
"Fresh construction of these roads would ensure that water doesn't get accumulated there. As some of the roads are in low-lying areas, construction will be carried out in such a manner that waterlogging doesn't take place. Now that the Council has cleared the proposal, construction will start soon. Work on most of the roads will be completed before monsoon," added the official.
Last year, a number of road cave-ins were reported from the NDMC area such as Khan Market, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Ashoka Road, Kali Bari Marg and Sardar Patel Marg among others.
