A new look New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is likely to be unveiled soon as the five-year term of the current council expires on January 18.
“The notification for the new council should ideally be issued before this date,” highly placed NDMC sources said on Saturday.
The council’s composition is to change around this time, following the delimitation exercise carried out in early 2008. Earlier there were six members, including the chairperson.
“Now apart from the chairperson, there would be two nominees of the Delhi government, two of the union urban development ministry and one from the ministry of home affairs,” sources said.
Then there are two MLAs from the council area - currently Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit and Karan Singh Tanwar — who too are members of the council. “Two more members — both non-official members — are yet to be finalised and hence may possibly delay in the notification for the new council,” the sources added.
“Only if there is no notification issued before the due date, then there is a provision to designate the chairperson as special officer,” the sources added.
The composition of the council would change as and when the amendment is validated by the Parliament. The New Delhi Municipal Council (Amendment) Bill 2010 is still pending with the standing committee for ministry of home affairs.
One of the major change is the number of MLAs would come down from three to two following the re-arrangement in constituencies after delimitation.
The other changes envisioned are provisions of reserved seats for women and those belonging to scheduled castes.
