About four lakh students from across the country appeared for the IIT Joint Entrance Examination on Sunday. With an overall increase in the number of seats in IITs due to implementation of OBC quota and opening of the new IITs, the number of aspirants for the prestigious institutes has gone up by nearly 80,000 this year.
Last year, about 3.2 lakh candidates had appeared in the test. "The total number of candidates for IIT-JEE is 3.98 lakh this year. They include about 63,000 in the Delhi region. There are about 6,000 seats in all the IITs, IT-BHU and ISM Dhanbad," IIT Delhi Director Prof Surendra Prasad said.
The exam comprises two question papers, each of three-hour duration. Both the papers consist of three separate sections Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. The question paper will have the same pattern as last year. The exam is conducted at 137 centres in the Delhi region, Prasad said.
The results will be declared on May 25 and counselling for the admission will be held in June. Besides the IITs, the IT BHU and ISM, Dhanbad, will also take students from the IIT-JEE merit list.
