To tackle the rising number of dengue and malaria cases in the city, the commissioner of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) Manish Gupta on Wednesday sent out a written communiqué to all heads of the departments of the government, autonomous and educational institutes.

He wants them to follow dengue preventive measures in their offices and institutions.

Since the government offices have been found to have mosquito larvae in their coolers, Gupta has asked the administrative heads to appoint nodal officers to ensure that preventive measures are followed.

The move came after the councilors complained of a lack of awareness in the city about dengue and malaria at the House meeting on Wednesday. Members of the Opposition and the ruling party stressed on the need for better and effective ways to combat dengue.

Leader of the Opposition in SDMC Farhad Suri said the failure of the three civic bodies in controlling vector-borne diseases has forced the Delhi government to step in.

"Health minister AK Walia has held a series of meetings with the officers of health dept of the three corporations and medical superintendents of hospitals. He has emphasised on correct and up-to-date reporting of dengue and malaria cases," he said.
