Needed: Four lanes on RTR flyover

The long-pending problem of congestion on the Rao Tula Ram (RTR) flyover might soon be resolved with Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) asking the authorities to convert the current flyover into four-lane passage.
The suggestion has been made in a report to the Delhi government, which recommends a number of solutions to tackle the problem of traffic jams in the city.
RITES has recommended a four-lane flyover for smooth flow of traffic on the sides of the flyover.
The flyover, constructed as part of the Commonwealth Games projects, was originally planned as a three-lane, one-way facility from the airport to the IIT but it had resulted in huge bottlenecks.RITES has proposed straight movement of traffic from National Highway 8 to IIT gate on the existing flyover and suggested that three lanes of the flyover should be used for uninterrupted movement between IIT Gate and NH-8.
The agency has also proposed a 1.5-metre cycle track and a two-metre footpath on Vasant Gaon side. They have also recommended allowing one-way traffic movement on Benito Juarez (BJ) Marg towards Ring Road and using two lanes for right hand movement to BJ Marg from IIT.
According to RITES, there is a need for two-phase traffic signal for the convenience of the pedestrians.
RITES has proposed that traffic should move clockwise between Benito Juarez Marg and RTR Marg, connecting Ring Road and Outer Ring Road and anti-clockwise between BJ Marg and RTR Marg. Presently traffic between Ring Road and Outer Ring Road moves through the flyover.
According to RITES, Baba Balaknath Marg should operate both ways to link both the roads — Outer Ring Road and Ring Road.
For this, both roads would have to be re-modelled and have service roads to facilitate movement in both directions for the local traffic.
The agency has also suggested restricting right/left turn from Outer Ring Road on BJ Marg and left turn on RTR from Ring Road. The report has also suggested better utilisation of the underutilised Nelson Mandela Marg.
