In the first accident, 60-year-old Premwati and her daughter-in-law Saroj Bala, 36, were killed and six of their family members were injured when a speeding truck hit the Toyota Innova the family had hired to visit the Golden Temple in Amritsar, around 2:15am on Tuesday.

“The accident took place at the Sher Shah-Mathura Road intersection. The truck, which was carrying construction material, was approaching from the Nizamuddin side. Its brake failed and it rammed the Innova from behind,” said an officer.

According to police, the sheer weight of the speeding truck dragged the SUV for several metres before finally coming to a stop.

While the truck driver and helper fled, the eight occupants of the Innova remained trapped in the mangled remains. Some onlookers informed the police and a team was rushed to the spot.

“Since all its gates of the car were locked, we had to seek the assistance of the fire department who dismantled the vehicle with gas cutters. Finally, we were able to pull each of them out and rushed them to RML Hospital, where Premwati and Saroj Bala were declared dead,” said the officer.

A case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving has been registered at Tilak Marg police station and the owner of the truck has been summoned for questioning as its driver remains on the run.

Another accident on Sunday night, police said, saw a 35-year-old security guard working at south Delhi’s BRT being mowed down by a speeding vehicle between the Defence Colony and Moolchand flyovers.
