In a major policy turn, the government has now decided that the BRT system’s bus lanes will be along the sides, not in the middle of the carriageway, HT reports.

After a fortnight of disastrous experimentation, the Delhi government has decided that the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system does not work in its present form.

In a major policy turn, the government has now decided that the BRT system’s bus lanes will be along the sides, not in the middle of the carriageway. Most accidents on the corridor have resulted from commuters trying to run across traffic to catch buses.

“We have decided to try out another model for the Moolchand to Delhi Gate stretch,” chief secretary Rakesh Mehta said. “The bus lane will be on the left, while the car lane would be in the centre. The bus lane will be painted in a different colour, and traffic police will be asked to enforce discipline.

“We want to see both the existing and the new models, and depending on the feedback, we will choose one... The existing BRT corridor has not been scrapped,” said Mehta.
