Beautification ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi is not restricted to footpaths or bus stops alone. The personnel of the Delhi fire department are set to get beautified too with snazzy uniforms.
The traditional khaki uniform will be replaced by bright orange and yellow overalls in October.
“People confuse us with the police because of the similar khaki uniform we share. A distinct uniform will make it easier for people to place us quickly at the venues,” said R. C. Sharma, director, Delhi Fire Service. “We might continue using the orange and yellow uniform after the Games as well,” he added. The new uniform will be made of flame retardant fabric and will have an illuminous strip.
The fire department will also acquire five Rapid Response Vehicles: fast moving cars that will be equipped with cutting tools, light generation machine and modern fire fighting tools. The fire fighting unit will be equipped with automatic vehicle locating system (AVLS) and tetra communication system during the Games.
For the first time, fire brigade headquarters will have GPS-based AVLS to trace fire engines on the web. Four large screens will be set up at the headquarters to monitor the movement of fire engines across the city.
The Delhi Fire Service personnel will also be provided with handsets of tetra communication system.
“The system was used during Melbourne and Beijing Games and we will be using it during the Games,” Sharma said.
“There will be more than 600 fire personnel at the game venues. They will be specially trained to tackle problems specific to stadia and enclosed spaces,” he added.
