The Mehrauli-Gurgaon (MG) Road will soon become wide enough to ease problems of traffic chaos.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) Standing Committee on Wednesday gave its nod to the transfer of its land to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to help widen the current four-lane road into a six-lane one.

Work by NHAI on MG Road had begun before the Commonwealth Games but a portion of the road at Sultanpur belonging to MCD was required to complete the project. The land belonged to MCD Primary School, Sultanpur (South Zone).

The Standing Committee of MCD on Wednesday said that it will transfer 110 square metres land in one metre width to aid the completion of the project, as it will help ease traffic jams in and around the area.

The Mehrauli-Gurgaon NH-236 was to be widened before the Commonwealth Games at the request of Delhi Government. The stretch was also to have a drain-cum-footpath.

The other two ends of MG Road — MB Road crossing to Andheria More and Delhi-Border to IFFCO Chowk — already has six lanes. M/S RITES had prepared the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the upgradation. During the preparation of the road, it was observed that in some stretches, the right of way was insufficient to accommodate a uniform cross section of a six-lane carriageway.

In order to make the uniform cross section, the NHAI approached MCD for the land. "The land belongs to MCD but the civic agency can afford to give NHAI a portion of it because the school has a huge campus," said an MCD official.
