The Delhi High Court on Thursday expressed serious concern over poor maintenance of waste collection centres (dhalaos) across the city.

The court told the civic agency that garbage dumps should only be constructed at places earmarked for it and not near shopping centers.

“MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi) is to ensure the dhalaos are properly maintained. They should be as per norms with regular check up to ensure that persons are performing their job,” said a bench of justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Valmiki J Mehta.

MCD standing counsel Sanjeev Sabharwal told the court that the orders will be immediately conveyed to MCD commissioner and the Sanitation Superintendent and it will be ensured that there will be no complaints in the future.

Sabharwal also said the civic agency would try its best to avoid dumps near shopping centres but said Delhi Development Authority (DDA) will have to provide more space for them.

The court issued the directions in a complaint filed by a builder DT Builtech.

The firm had applied for a commercial plot in a local shopping centre in Dilshad Garden.

After the allotment when its owner visited the plot he found a heap of garbage lying in front of it. He realised that it was part of the rubbish that had scattered out of the dump.

The builder argued that as per the plan, the dump was far away from his plot.

The Bench directed MCD to remove the garbage dump in front of the plot and clean the area within 10 days.
