With thousands of panic-stricken north-easterners leaving Bangalore and Pune, Delhi Police commissioner Neeraj Kumar has asked those living in Delhi not to be alarmed as security has been beefed up.

“Wish to assure all people from the north-east that there is no reason to panic or leave Delhi. Please report any disturbing incident to us. We are here to help,” Kumar tweeted on Friday.

His remarks came following reports that a large number of people from the north-eastern states were leaving the cities of Pune, Chennai and Bangalore following rumours that they would be attacked as a result of the Assam riots.

Police personnel also reviewed the security situation in areas where north-eastern people reside in large numbers and said that no untoward incident had been reported. “We have formed several committees and have regular meetings with representatives from the north-east. We are also involving landlords and sensitising them,” said a senior police officer of the North district.

Senior police officers met student leaders and assured them that there was no need to panic.
