The Delhi government will double the number of buses plying on city roads at night to 85.
The move by the government comes after the rape of a 23-year-old woman on a bus in south Delhi on December 16 triggered a hue and cry for improved public transport system at night.
Chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday told officials to improve the services of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), which operates a fleet of around 6,000 buses, with focus on security and safety. The transport department will chalk out a plan for improving its services.
"The routes will touch all important junctions in the city. We may also consider deployment of Home Guards on buses later," she said.
The government also decided to discipline rural transport services and will write to police to intensify action against buses with tinted glasses.
Dikshit on Wednesday held a meeting with transport minister Ramakant Goswami, chief secretary PK Tripathi, transport commissioner Rajinder Kumar and other senior officials on the issue. She said that DTC would now ply 85 buses, instead of 42, as part of its night service to enable passengers to travel across the city.
The department will chalk out a plan to improve the public transport system and take steps to ensure enforcement of the rules and regulations.
The department has been asked to strengthen its enforcement wing as the number of vehicles in the city has gone up manifold.
Chief minister Dikshit said there had been a large number of complaints regarding violations, including changes in routes, overcrowding, overcharging and denial to ply as per the need of passengers, by grameen sewa vehicles and auto-rickshaws.
The transport department will now take strict action, including the cancellation of permits, on receipt of complaints.
A helpline that will enable passengers to register complaints will also be set up.
