Congress on Tuesday rejected BJP's charge that there was partiality on the issue of providing security to BJP MP Varun Gandhi.

"There is a laid down procedure for providing security to every citizen. If it is felt that security needs to be increased, it is done," party spokesman Manish Tewari told reporters in New Delhi.

But there was no partiality on the question of giving security cover to Varun, he said after BJP raised in the Lok Sabha the issue of scaling up the security of Varun.

In the Lok Sabha, BJP's Deputy Leader Sushma Swaraj referred to the arrest of seven alleged associates of underworld don Chhota Shakeel who had apparently come to Delhi to kill an advocate who had taken up Varun's case in the alleged hate-speech incident.

Asked whether it was proper to provide security to Varun as the situation he was in was of his own making (communal speeches), Tewari said the party has already condemned his act.

"The way he spoke against the minorities is not acceptable in a civil society...But if he asks for security, government will take (adequate) steps," he added.
