As the monsoon failed to keep its date with Delhi on Tuesday, people in the city continued to reel under hot and humid conditions with the mercury touching a high of 40.6 degree Celsius.

Today's maximum was four degrees above normal and up from yesterday's 40 degrees while the minimum was recorded at 29.2 degrees as against 28.1 degrees the previous day, the Met Department said.

Humidity on a higher side also added to the woes of the citizens in the capital which has missed its June 29 date with the monsoon, the normal onset of the rainy season in the city.

According to the weatherman, Delhiites will have to wait for at least a week more for monsoon rains as the seasonal rains phenomenon have virtually stopped their northward progress owing to lack of favourable wind currents over the Indian Ocean.

"The monsoon currents have fizzled out and we have to wait for a new system to develop," Ajit Tyagi, Director General of India Meteorological Department (IMD), said. Last year, the monsoon had reached the city on June 30.
