The city woke up to a horrific road accident, in which an Air Force officer's minor daughter and her rickshaw-puller were killed and three other children sustained serious injuries.
Reckless driving by a chartered (company staff vehicle) bus driver hit a cycle-rickshaw, ferrying the four children, near Jalvayu Vihar of Sector 25 at 6.30 am on Friday.
The victim girl, Sucheta Majumdar (16), a class XI student of Kendriya Vidyalaya, was the only child of Wing Commander Chandan Majumdar, a resident of Jalvayu Vihar's J Block.
Majumdar is currently serving a Defence intelligence agency, SK Prabhakar, a relative told Hindustan Times.
The three injured children — Bharti Sharma and Aditya Sharma and Nischay Sandhu — were admitted to Prakash Hospital.
Nischay, who had his leg fractured and sustained other serious injuries, was later referred to Kailash Hospital. The rickshaw-puller, who was killed in the collision, was identified as Ram Sagar (40) of Samastipur (Bihar).
"A little after the rickshaw had come out of the society gate, a bus going towards Spice Mall knocked it down. A PCR van standing nearby took the victims to hospital," said eyewitnesses.
Bharti Sharma, an injured student and a resident of Sector 20 G Block, told this correspondent at the hospital, "I and Aditya, who is also from my block, boarded the rickshaw from our houses. The rickshaw then went to Sector 25 from where three more students got in. When we crossed the Sector 25 gate towards Sector 25A and turned left towards Spice Mall, a speeding bus hit us."
Recounting the horror, she said, "The rickshaw-puller was flipped over 10 feet away. We were also pushed out of the rickshaw and we fell sideways. The bus after hitting us rammed into a tree."
Another injured Aditya Sharma, a class I student, said, "My limbs and chest are badly hurting." His father Jitendra Sharma runs a dhaba.
"Bus driver Sarvjit Singh, a resident of Bhajanpura, has been arrested," said Arun Kumar Singh, SHO, Sector 20 police station.
