Keeping generation of property tax as its top priority, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation has decided to conduct a fresh survey of the total number of properties falling under its jurisdiction.
At present, the corporation has to depend on other sources such as the Survey of India and Geospatial Data Centre for details of properties.
The standing committee in its budget on Tuesday said that it would spend Rs. 10 crore for this purpose. The civic body officials said they would hire a private agency to conduct a survey and prepare a report of all the properties.
"A survey of all the properties had been done by an agency of the Delhi government sometime back. Now, we want to have our own data of the properties," said Yogender Chandolia, standing committee chairman.
As per estimates, there are around 9 lakh properties in north Delhi and only around 3 lakh owners pay tax. By identifying properties correctly, the corporation hopes to streamline its collections. According to officials, till last fiscal, around 2.9 lakh property owners used to pay tax. However, during the current fiscal, they have been able to add 60,000 more properties in the tax net.
Deputy chairman VP Pandey said agencies with prior experience in the field would be chosen. “The private agency that will be hired will have to rope in professionals in the field to survey the properties. Their mandate will be to survey the total area of the property, built-up area and other aspects to meet the parameters of taxation. The properties could then be categorised in different group of properties,” he said.
The north corporation has set an ambitious target of R450 crore during the financial year 2013-14. This will be Rs. 125 crore more than the target of R325 crore set during the current financial year.
