With cardiac surgeon Dr Naresh Trehan and his team moving from the Escorts Heart Institute to the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, a reverse exodus of senior doctors from Apollo to Fortis Healthcare is in the offing.

The entire team of cancer specialists at Apollo — including senior oncologists Dr SH Advani and Dr Harsh Dua, and surgical oncologist Dr Sameer Kaul — has an offer to set up a cancer speciality centre for Fortis Healthcare.

A senior oncologist at Apollo said, “We are considering the offer very seriously because they have promised a lot. If it works out, about 30 people from Apollo’s cancer team will move.”

Apollo’s surgical team across departments may also be affected, with heart surgeons Dr BN Das and Dr Anup K Ganjoo, general surgeon Dr AK Kriplani and orthopaedic surgeon Dr Yash Gulati also considering offers.

A senior consultant at Apollo said, “Many specialists from Apollo’s cardiac centre are likely to leave as the hospital has promised Dr Trehan and his team two operation theatres and 50 beds, which will go up to 100.”

Dr Trehan said they had no reason to worry. “We plan to integrate with the existing team and set up the best heart command centre at Apollo Hospital. When we have the best centre, there is no dearth of patients,” he said.
