Going out on a summer vacation has proved costly for these families. Burglars struck Nehru Apartment in Kalkaji and targeted the houses whose owners were out of town. This is a second such incident within a week's time.
Last week, burglars struck at five locked flats in Zakirbagh Apartment, in New Friends Colony and decamped with cash and jewellery worth Rs 70 lakh. The burglars broke open into four houses in the early hours on Wednesday and fled with cash and jewellry.
The neighbours who woke up after hearing suspicious noise, tried to chase the burglars but they managed to flee.
"Around 3.45am I saw suspicious movement in house number 108 which is at the ground floor. I woke up my husband who informed others and tried to chase the burglars but they managed to flee by scaling the boundary wall," said Raj Rani Jain, who lives at house number 115 of Nehru Apartment. The burglars strike at house number 108, 116, 88 and 89.
JP Gupta, a senior citizen who lives in 108 said, "From past 15 days me and my wife, both registered with senior citizen cell of Delhi Police, were living in New Friends Colony and used to visit our Nehru Apartment house only in daytime. The burglars broke the three locks to enter the house and fled with cash and jewellry worth lakhs".
Burglars had struck at four houses in the same locality on Friday also. "I had left for Varanasi on Tuesday evening and got to know about the incident when I was in train. I immediately took a flight back to Delhi," said MA Mateen, vice-president, Berger Paints.
House number 88 belongs to Naresh Kumar whose family lives in Dubai while house number 89 belongs to Sukhbir Singh, who retired as deputy director from ministry of commerce.
Meanwhile Delhi Police have collected forensic evidence from the spot. "Four houses were burgled in Nehru Apartment and we have formed various teams to trace the criminals," said Ajay Chaudhry, additional commissioner of police (southeast).
