Residents of New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) colonies will soon get new gymnasiums in their areas. This proposal of the NDMC was tabled in the civic agency's meeting held last week.
According to the proposal, the plan is to construct gymnasiums in 37 colonies. But the civic agency plans to begin the construction of these fitness centres in 14 residential colonies. These gymnasiums will be constructed in the form of porta cabins.
NDMC officials claim that the residents have been demanding a fitness centre in their areas for quite some time.
"As per the proposal, we will be constructing porta cabins which will be equipped with treadmills, cross trainers, exercise bikes and weight-lifting benches among others," said a senior NDMC official.
For maintenance work and upkeep of the trainer, RWAs will have to collect membership fees from each household. The maintenance cost will be deducted directly from the salaries of Central government employees residing in these colonies.
The gymnasiums will be constructed at a cost of R2.35 cr. "NDMC's Welfare Department will take a call on the issues pertaining to electricity and water charges, user fees, maintenance and operation, security and guard-cum-trainer," the official added.
Some of the colonies which will benefit from the move include Lodhi Road, Gole Market, Mandir Marg, Sarojini Nagar and RK Puram. A meeting was held with all the Resident Welfare Association (RWA) in June this year to gauge the feasibility of the proposal. Though the RWAs showed a keen interest in the project, a representative from Rohini Complex-which is an NDMC area-had expressed reservation.
While the NDMC will pay for the construction of porta cabins and equipment, the maintenance of the gymnasiums will be undertaken by colony residents.
