It took 17 electrocution deaths for discoms like North Delhi Power Limited (NDPL) to swing into action. NDPL has now decided to train independent electricians in neighbourhoods within its area of distribution at North and Northwest Delhi.
For this, NDPL has decided to ask the Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) to nominate electricians from their areas. NDPL will arrange for their training at its training centre at Rohini.
“It is common practice for the residents to call a local electrician for any electrical wiring, fittings or repair work, which, if done by an untrained electrician, increases the risk of electrical shocks or electrocution. Some cases of electrical shock and electrocution have been reported recently, mainly attributed to faulty internal wiring and earth leakage. The risk of this happening is more during excessive rains and water logging. The proposed programme will focus on training electricians on how to identify and rectify faulty internal wiring and earth leakages at the residence of the consumers and at commercial establishments to minimise such accidents,” said an NDPL spokesperson.
The electricians will undergo Installation of Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB’s) as per the statutory norms for consumers applying for connection of 5KW and above.
“The requisite mandatory clearance of lines for buildings as per Indian electricity rules and on common electrical, safety and legal hazards of unauthorized construction and faulty wiring,” added the spokesperson. The electricians would also be provided an electrical safety manual by NDPL.
