A 24-year-old non-resident Indian (NRI) was molested at a five-star hotel in Vasant Vihar in south Delhi last Friday. Police have arrested an employee of Jaypee Vasant Continental, who worked as a masseur at the hotel spa, for molesting the US-based NRI woman.
"I am retelling this series of events to end a powerfully destructive cycle of silence, which hurts women all around the world, and is especially prevalent in Delhi," the woman wrote in her complaint to Delhi police.
"If a woman in Delhi is not safe in a five-star hotel with her parents, what will happen to a woman by herself in the streets" she wrote.
The woman and her mother had gone to the spa at Jaypee Vasant Continental on Friday. "When going in for the head massage, although there were five other available chairs in the room where my mother was, I was taken ?in a separate room. There the saloon employee molested me," she said in her complaint.
The woman had checked into the hotel along with her parents on January 12. She first reported the incident to the hotel'?s lobby manager? and alleged the hotel authorities were not cooperative and were reluctant in informing the police.
A Jaypee hotel official, however, denied the allegation that they were not cooperative.
"Our staff was cooperating with the victim and senior officers talked to her. We have CCTV footage of that conversation. The spa centre is outsourced and we have sacked the accused," said the hotel spokesperson.
"The woman, a US national, was on a business trip to India. On the basis of her complaint, we have arrested Sanjay Kumar, an employee of the spa centre. During interrogation, he claimed he was just using some technique of head massage," a senior police officer said.
The police have taken the woman's statement and she has returned to the US. "Since she had to return, we got her statement recorded," the officer added.
Although Delhi Police claim they are focusing on bringing down crime against women, cases of molestation and rape have only gone up.
