Taking a step forward to strengthen internal security, the Centre has decided to place 10,000 additional National Security Guard (NSG) commandos at its two new regional centres in Kolkata and Hyderabad.

The move comes after the government put in place four NSG hubs — in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad — after the 26/11 Mumbai terror strikes.

NSG director general NPS Aulakh told Hindustan Times that the Union Home Ministry had sanctioned the proposal a few days ago and a massive exercise was being launched to set up the two centres, with 5,000 commandos each, and train the additional manpower.

“The four NSG hubs are already in place before the June 30 deadline and 250 commandos have already been positioned at each hub,” Aulakh said.

The NSG has started acquiring land for the two centres.

The major challenge for the NSG, however, would be to train the 10,000 black cat commandos drawn from the paramilitary and defence forces and position them at the two locations as early as possible, he said.

At present, the total strength of the NSG is around 8,000.

The NSG was set up in 1984 to tackle all facets of terrorism in India.
