The nude body of an unidentified girl, aged around 15 years, was found in the Bawana canal in outer Delhi on Sunday morning.
This latest incident comes almost 20 days after two more bodies - one male and another female - were recovered from the same canal. Both the bodies are yet to be identified, police said.
Though there were no injury marks on the girl's body, police suspect that the victim was raped before being murdered and dumped in the canal.
Around 7am, the police control room received a call about a girl's body being found in the Bawana canal.
A police team immediately reached the spot and took the body in their custody. It was later sent to the mortuary of the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital for identification.
A case has been registered and efforts are on to identify the girl. Police said there is a possibility that the girl may have drowned, an angle that too is under probe.
"We found the letters 'NR' and 'RK' inscribed on her right arm. An 'N' was inscribed on her left hand. She wore an Om locket in her neck and a gold earring in the right ear. Considering the condition of the body, rape cannot be ruled out," said the police officer, adding that "there were no external injuries on the body, which makes the reason of death unclear."
The Haryana police have been informed about the incident and have been asked to help in the girl's identification.
Local police stations in Bawana's nearby areas too have been informed about the incident.
"We are checking the list of missing persons to establish the identity of the deceased. Many people come to visit the dam in Haryana and drown there. A number of times, their bodies float in the canal and reach Bawana. So we have to seek Haryana police's help," added the officer.
