As Delhi University colleges began their undergraduate admission process on Friday, the line of admission seekers stretched very long.
Many students were asked to return the next day.
At Sri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), close to 120 students turned up for admission for B.Com (H).
“We have to fill 250 seats in B.Com (H) and had put up a list of 296 students. We invited 90 students to come on day one. Around 70 turned up,” said Dr Gopalji, admission coordinator for commerce.
“We got a good response from OBC students with more than 20 of them getting admissions.”
In BA (H) Economics, 75 students took admission.
At Hans Raj College, the majority turned up for Science courses. While commerce had only 57 takers on the first day, 188 students got admission into science courses.
At Hindu College, 191 admissions took place, with the maximum in Physics, Chemistry and Economics.
Ramjas College almost filled up its Economics seats, with 34 out of 54 seats being taken. Indraprastha College also admitted 238 students in all.
“We got a massive response for the first day. We have kept realistic cutoffs this year, and hope to get a good lot of students,” said Savithri Singh, principal, Acharya Narendra Dev College, which admitted 115 students.
Miranda House, which gave a 10 per cent relaxation for OBC students in Economics – the maximum relaxation allowed — filled seven of its 11 seats. In Geography, it filled six of the nine OBC seats and in Physics there were seven admissions.
“We are nearing completion in many of the subjects including History,” said principal Pratibha Jolly.
“We made 327 admissions today, which is almost 40 per cent of the total admissions.”
The OBC response has still not picked up, despite colleges giving significant relaxation in cutoffs. At Hindu, only seven OBC admissions took place, while Ramjas saw 14 and Daulat Ram 12 admissions.
At Sri Venkateswara College, only 13 out of 342 admissions were in the OBC category.
“It is too early to say about OBC seats. We are hoping that students will come gradually,” said Vijay Sharma, principal of Ram Lal Anand (morning).,
Students also did not turn up in huge numbers for the popular BA Programme.
“Students will first opt for subjects like Economics, Psychology, Political Science, Sociology etc before turning to BA Programme. So we expect the seats to fill up gradually,” said Sharma.
