Balraj Singh, alias Raj, the 21-year-old Ola cab driver arrested for allegedly molesting a Belgian woman, was asleep when three police teams raided his employer’s servants quarter in Gurgaon early Sunday morning.
When told about the allegations against him, Singh pleaded innocence and said his intentions were “not morally wrong” when he kissed the woman and clicked her photographs. The accused had no signs of remorse even as he was booked for molestation and sent to Tihar jail for 14 days, said police.
Police said Singh tricked the woman to come and sit in the front seat during the drive from Gurgaon to CR park. He switched off his GPS and claimed it was not working and asked her to sit next to him and show directions.
How Singh tried to avoid the arrest
Singh deleted the recent call log from the woman’s mobile phone after taking it from her on the pretext of using the phone’s GPS.
“What confirms his intentions is that he did not drop the woman at her friend’s place because he feared that the woman would tell her friend about his indecent acts. He deliberately clicked the ‘complete journey’ button on his mobile app in CR Park area and continued driving towards Govindpuri. He then dropped the woman there,” said an investigating officer.
The police are now trying to ascertain if Singh was involved in similar cases or had a criminal past. A team is being sent to his native village in Rajasthan’s Alwar to collect more details about his record.
How the cops traced the Ola driver
On being asked, how they identified Singh and reached his hideout in less than five hours after the crime, a senior police officer said that using the booking details on the woman’s phone they first traced the owner of the vehicle, Vikram Singh.
“When the cab owner was informed about the crime, he took the police teams led by SHO Govind Chauhan and SI Avinash Kumar to the servants quarter of his house where the accused was sleeping. The vehicle was also recovered from outside the house,” the officer said.
Meanwhile, the Belgian woman recorded her statement and identified Singh in a test identification parade (TIP). She told police that it was her maiden cab ride after she landed in India last Tuesday. The woman was staying with her two friends in Gurgaon.
A police officer said the woman told them that the last 30 minutes of her travel was the most traumatic. She told the police that despite the driver clicking her photographs and forcibly kissing her, she kept her calm to avoid any further harm.
“Her reactions made the accused feel that everything was normal. She did not raise any alarm till she was inside the cab,” the officer said.
