Dr Goura Kishore Rath, the chief of cancer department, is most likely to become the next director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
According to sources, the Appointments Committee has cleared the name of Dr Rath for the post of new Director. Dr Rath’s name has now been forwarded to the Delhi assembly for the final go-ahead, which is a formality.
Dr Rath, the head of Dr B.R. Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital (BRAIRCH) and professor and head of department of radiation oncology is known for establishing the ultra-modern department of radiation oncology. Dr Rath is a radiotherapist who specialises in cancers of the brain; advanced head, neck and skin cancers.
According to sources, the Appointments Committee has turned down the name of Dr R.C. Deka, dean of examination at AIIMS thrice because of complaints of financial irregularities against him. Apart from the vigilance inquiry, faculty had complained Deka had not followed the rules while purchasing cochlear implants.
The Director’s post at AIIMS has been lying vacant ever since July 2, when Dr P. Venugopal retired.
Health secretary Naresh Dayal, however, denied any knowledge of Rath’s appointment. “As far as I know, the decision is still pending. The health ministry has not been intimated about any such decision," he said.
