Drunk driving took yet another life in the Capital and left three people critically injured after a car hit a trailer truck from behind in the South Delhi area on Saturday night.
According to the police, a software engineer from a multinational company was killed in the incident.
The police said that the incident happened on the Rajokri flyover, in Vasant Kunj area in south Delhi, at 2am when 24-year-old Rakesh Kumar Singh was returning home with his three friends.
Singh was driving his father’s Hyundai i10 and had his three friends — Himanshu Kumar (25), Ravinder Singh (24) and Arun Kumar (25) — with him.
“We believe that they were all drunk and were on their way back to Singh’s rented house in Gurgaon,” said a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity.
“They were going at a high speed when suddenly a trailer truck came in front of them. Singh was not able to control his vehicle and hit the truck from behind,” the officer said.
According to the police, the impact was so strong that it the front of the car was mangled and the occupants were trapped. Bystanders immediately called the police.
Once they reached the spot, the police managed to bring out Himanshu, Ravinder and Arun, but Singh remained trapped. “We had to use a gas cutter to rescue him. But by the time he was taken to the hospital he was dead,” the officer said.
The police said the others were admitted at AIIMS Trauma Centre and still in critical condition. They have registered a case and are investigating the matter further.
