He slashed a 4-year-old girl’s throat for Rs 8,000 and a silver anklet. Ten days after Prakash allegedly killed Sunaina after drugging her mother and two-year-old brother during a robbery at her Patel Nagar residence he was apprehended on Thursday evening. Prakash was the victim’s neighbour.
“A painter, Prakash began staying at a rented accommodation with his wife Sandhya after his family disowned him four years ago,” said a senior police officer. Police said he had been unemployed for the last six months and needed money.
“On August 16 evening, he gave Sushila, Sunaina’s mother, and her brother Dev a cold-drink laced with sedatives. However, while he was committing the theft, Sunaina returned from school and cried-out when she saw her mother and brother unconscious on the floor. Prakash feared that he would be caught, so he took her to the kitchen and slit her throat with a knife,” said the officer.
According to police, Prakash had been on their radar from the day he went missing from his rented accommodation for the first time in 18 months.
“During investigation, we discovered that he had left Delhi and gone to Chennai by air. But in Chenna, our team found that he was flying back to Delhi. Once in Delhi, he kept shifting and was finally caught last evening thanks to a team that had been tracking his movement through electronic surveillance,” the officer said.
Prakash was traced to Jaipur but managed to flee when the police team arrived.
“He was finally arrested from the Shadipur depot last evening,” the officer added.
