A 40-year-old man was killed while four others injured after a speeding Maruti Swift car driven by a doctor hit two motorcycles in southwest Delhi’s Dabri area on Wednesday night.
The car driver, Ashwini Kumar, who runs a private clinic in Hari Nagar, was allegedly driving under the influence of liquor. Kumar was arrested on charges of rash and negligent driving, causing death and hurt and was later released on bail.
According to the police, the accident took place around 8.30pm near the Vijay Enclave traffic signal in Dabri. The deceased has been identified as Gauri Shankar Jha, a native of Madhubani district in Bihar. The injured are Gauri Shankar's friend Ajit Kumar Jha, Dharam Prakash, a mechanic, Lekhraj and Dinesh.
A police officer said that Gauri Shankar worked in a cargo company in Naraina and lived with his family in a rented accommodation in Arjun Park area in Dabri. On Wednesday night, Gauri Shankar was returning home with his friend Ajit on his motorcycle when its tyre punctured.
"They parked the motorcycle on the roadside and called Dharam Prakash, a mechanic. Suddenly, a speeding white Maruti Swift car heading towards Dwarka hit the three men and the motorcycle. After hitting, the driver lost control over his vehicle and hit another motorcycle coming from the opposite direction before coming to a halt,” said the officer.
Five persons were injured in the accident and all were rushed to the DDU Hospital where doctors pronounced Gauri Shankar dead on arrival. Ajit was later shifted at a private hospital as his condition became critical.
Ashwini Kumar was arrested and a case was registered.
