The situation is likely to improve by next week when the extra stock of onions imported from Pakistan hits the Delhi market. The Centre announced that 300 tonnes of onions imported from Pakistan would be available from January 7.
Even when public owned and cooperative stores sold onions at R40 per kg, the retail rates by vendors ranged from R60 to R70 per kg in colonies across Delhi.
At Safal and Kendriya Bhandar outlets onion was being sold at R40 per kg as part of Delhi government's market intervention scheme. "The wholesale rate has gone up (but) we have not revised the rates yet," said Jayashree Raghuraman, Delhi's commissioner (food and supplies).
Mohit Buddhiraja, an onion trader at Azadpur Mandi said that onions from Pakistan are large in size and so only hotel owners go for it.
Said Brahma Yadav, chairman of Delhi Agricultural Marketing Board, "The situation will improve by January 15 when supplies come from Maharashtra and Gujarat.”
