Oopposition parties on same page before DUSU elections

The four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP) has helped the two unlikeliest of groups to make the same demands in the upcoming Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU).
Both the All India Students’ Association (AISA) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) are opposing the implementation of the FYUP and have made it their main poll agenda.
“Students were not consulted during the implementation of FYUP and they are suffering because of it now. The NSUI-led DUSU shut itself in its office throughout its tenure, refusing to fight for the students. We have been asking the university to return to the three-year system and will continue to do so in the future, irrespective of how the students vote. We are ready to coordinate with anybody who opposes the FYUP,” said Aman Awana, ABVP’s presidential candidate.
The ABVP is planning to look into the issue of university special buses in south campus, regulation of rent in PG accommodations near colleges and making the campus safer for women.
For candidates from AISA as well as All India Students’ Federation (AISF) the stir against FYUP is the main issue that they will contest the election on. AISA had also conducted a referendum with DU students, where more than 95% of the students opposed the new programme.
The other issues that AISA will focus on during elections are gender rights and sensitisation on campus, readings translated in Hindi and remedial classes for weak students, issue of lack of hostels and shabby infrastructure in colleges.
The only student party that hasn’t taken a stand for or against the FYUP so far is the incumbent NSUI. The party is set to introduce its candidates on Saturday. They are expected to fight elections on the issue of women safety, infrastructure in colleges, hostel facilities, increased job opportunity, etc.
