Orissa is fast turning out to be the new supplier of drugs to the Capital.
In the last 20 days alone, the coastal state has supplied more than 400kg of marijuana to the Capital. These are just the consignments that Delhi Police have managed to confiscate.
According to the police, the amount of contraband that managed to circulate in the streets of Delhi is much higher. “This is a new trend.
Places in Orissa such as Cuttack and outskirts of Bhubaneshwar are transforming into big suppliers of ganja. Most of the contraband is locally grown and is of good quality,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity, as he was not authorised to speak to the media.
On Tuesday, two youths were arrested in north Delhi allegedly with 104 kg of ganja that they were smuggling from Orissa. “Rajiv Kumar (22) and Dayanand (21) were apprehended from Mukundpur Chowk when they came there for delivering ganja to their contact,” said Ashok Chand, DCP (crime).
This is the second big haul of ganja being smuggled to Delhi from Orissa in the past 20 days. On March 30, police arrested four persons, including a 60-year-old man, from Samaipur Badli with 221kg of ganja.
“The ganja was provided to them by Vishal, a resident of Bihar and presently residing in Noida. The contraband was procured from Cuttack and was given to them by Vishal at Noida. These two drug traffickers hired an auto rickshaw to come Delhi for distribution at various parts of northwest and outer Delhi,” Chand said adding, “Vishal is absconding and efforts are on to apprehend him.”
In 2011 alone, police have recovered over 600kg of the contraband. “The source of all this is either from Cuttack, Puri or Sambalpur in Orissa.
Different transportation techniques were used for trafficking the ganja from Orissa to Delhi. It is smuggled either through tankers or by use of luxury vehicles,” Chand added.
