The police on Wednesday arrested a Gurgaon-based consultant for the murder of a 27-year-old masseuse in central Delhi’s Rajender Nagar two weeks ago. Mary Matthew alias Rekha Joy alias Swapna was strangled for overcharging for a massage session, police said.
Shyno Varghese, a consultant with a Gurgaon-based travel agency, had set up an appointment with Mathew on March 9 for a massage session to alleviate joint pain.
“Varghese had contacted Matthew after seeing her profile on a website. Their deal was finalised for R500 and she asked him to come over to her Rajender Nagar parlour,” said Devesh Chandra Srivastava, additional commissioner of police (central).
But when Varghese reached the office, Matthew allegedly demanded R2,000 for the treatment. When Varghese refused to pay up, Matthew allegedly threatened to get him beaten up by some men standing outside her parlour.
“That is when an angry Varghese strangled her and fled with her laptop, mobile phone and ATM card,” said Srivastava. Mathew’s body was found lying in the basement of her rented office on March 14.
A joint team of the special staff and Rajender Nagar police station cracked the case after they put the missing phone on technical surveillance. The police found that Varghese had contacted Matthew several times on March 9. Varghese was arrested from Gurgaon on Wednesday.
During interrogation, Varghese confessed his involvement in the murder, the police said.
Matthew had a degree from a leading airhostess-training centre in Delhi. She was married to the son of a serving IPS officer in Jammu and Kashmir. Matthew’s husband did not know her original name. He was not aware that she was running a massage parlour.
