The issue of terrorism, and the closure of 26/11 Mumbai attack case—progress on which will give the UPA government the popular support to push ahead with the dialogue process with Pakistan — are not making much of a headway.

The issue of terrorism, and the closure of 26/11 Mumbai attack case—progress on which will give the UPA government the popular support to push ahead with the dialogue process with Pakistan — are not making much of a headway.

But New Delhi firmly believes that even for getting the perpetrators of Mumbai attack to justice, it has to engage with Pakistan and there is no “substitute” for dialogue.

Foreign secretary Nirupama Rao raised the 26/11 case in the talks with her Pakistan counterpart Slaman Bashir on Tuesday.

But sources said Pakistan stressed that they are also victims of terrorism and pointed out that they are doing “everything possible in the legal framework” to ensure the Mumbai plotters are brought to justice.

Sources said Pakistan side repeated what their interior minister told home minister P Chidambaram in Thimphu on terrorism. “Pakistan is sending a judicial panel to India. And they pointed out the there were useful exchanges between the two interior ministers and secretaries. And the momentum should be kept on the issue”, said an official. Pakistan realises “how the monster of terrorism it has reared has turned against it, says ans official.
