Traffic police chief S.N.Shrivastava on Wednesday told reporters elaborate arrangements have been made to ensure “free and uninterrupted movement of parade along the route and to regulate city traffic”.
Massive traffic regulations will also be in place for full dress rehearsals on January 23, he added.
According to traffic police, no traffic will be allowed along the parade route from 4 a.m. till 1 p.m. on Republic Day. “There can be some discomfort to the public due to large scale diversions the motorists should show some patience and follow traffic rules for minimum inconvenience,” said Shrivastava.
The traffic chief said they have earmarked a 'prohibited area' (around Rajpath) where the movement of vehicles will be completely restricted. Vehicles will not be allowed on Rajpath from 6 p.m. on January 25. Cross movement of traffic on Rajpath from Rafi Marg, Janpath, Man Singh Road and C Hexagon will also be closed from 8.45 am on January 26.
Movement of vehicles will also be checked in the ‘controlled area’ where only labelled vehicles of the invitees and bonafide residents shall be permitted to enter till conclusion of the parade. For Full dress rehearsals, traffic restrictions will come in from 9.30 a.m. However, no traffic will be allowed on Vijay Chowk and Rajpath from 5 a.m. on January 23.
Suggesting people should avoid central Delhi on both Republic Day and January 23, the traffic chief said alternate routes could be taken to reach destinations.
"In case the journey is unavoidable, people travelling between north and south Delhi can take Ring Road, Lajpat Rai and Mathura Road.” Commercial goods vehicles will not be allowed between Sarai Kale Khan and ISBT between 7.30 am and 1.30 pm.
