Next time when you park your car illegally in a market area, be ready to shell out a hefty fine. Coming down heavily on motorists parking vehicles illegally on public land or on the footpath, obstructing pedestrian movement, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has started towing away their vehicles.

To reclaim the vehicle, a fine ranging between Rs 3,000 and Rs 5,000 is being imposed, depending on factors such as the weight of the vehicle and number of days it remains in the MCD’s custody.

The traffic police charges R300 to release illegally parked cars. But now as part of its drive to remove encroachments from public land, the MCD has also started taking action against illegal parking.

In the past month, 40 vehicles were impounded and fined by MCD.

The drive that started in Lajpat Nagar market and New Friends Colony will soon be launched in other parts of the city.

“We have collected Rs 1.50 lakh so far. People often park their cars on footpaths, leaving no space for pedestrians,” said a senior MCD official.
