Videos of people being pushed into trains by marshals in Shanghai may have made you laugh but a similar situation has started to develop in the Delhi Metro.
Marshals at the Rajiv Chowk Station have now started to push the overflowing inside the coaches to help the doors close.
"There is no place to even keep a foot inside the train during peak hours. I have to leave two trains in order to get a place to stand inside the train," said Raghav Minocha, 27, a software engineer who travels by the Yellow Line (between HUDA City Centre and Jahangirpuri) each day.
The Rajiv Chowk Station, Central Secretariat Station and the Kashmere Gate Station, which serve as changeover stations, are the most crowded during peak traffic hours.
"All you see in the station are people. There is no place to walk, getting onto the train is another matter altogether," said Rashmi Mehra, 38, a private bank employee.
The newly opened section of the Central Secretariat Station has also seen a huge rush after the opening of the Central Secretariat- Badarpur Line.
The small area of the new platforms adds to passengers' problems. "People stand on the staircase during office hours as there is just no place on the platform. A stampede is just waiting to happen here," said Mitali Pandey, 25, a chartered accountant who has to travel around the city for work.
The huge crowd is also increasing the transit time due to delay in closing of doors.
"The Metro has become just like a blueline bus. There is no comfort anymore," said Megha Pathak, a college student.
The Delhi Ring Rail Service, which runs along the ring road, was to be revived before the Commonwealth Games but the plan did not take off. The trains, which have the capacity to ferry 7,000 passengers daily has a ridership of only 2,000.
The DMRC has plans to increase the number of coaches in the train to six in December. The waiting time between trains has also been reduced, according to officials.
"Two more coaches will also be introduced in December. Beyond this there is nothing more we can do," said a DMRC spokesperson.
