The Centre has decided to send nearly 5,000 additional security personnel for anti-Naxal operations in the border areas of Orissa and Chhattisgarh.
Home minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday met chief minister of Orissa Naveen Patnaik and his Chhattisgarh counterpart Raman Singh to review the anti-Naxal operations. Chidambaram offered full support by the Centre and clarified that the Central forces will not carry out any operations without the complements of states police.
“The earlier practice has been discontinued for a year and a half. All operations are conducted by the paramilitary forces with the complements of states police. All operations are now joint operations,” he said.
He also said that violence and the number of casualties have been reduced in areas falling under 270 police stations in 64 districts in the eight states.
According to sources, the Centre has planned fortification of 400 police stations in Naxal-affected areas in nine states. The cost will come at R2 crore per police station.
