Concern that the government’s primary criminal tracking system could slip on deadlines, Home Minister P. Chidambaram has bluntly told the National Crime Records Bureau to stick to project roll-out timelines till 2012 when the tracking system would be commissioned.

Chidambaram’s nudge came at the the silver jubilee celebrations of the NCRB that wants to create a database of crime, criminals and biometric profiles.

“If we remain firm... it is possible to limit the slippage in some stages,” he said, giving the bureau time till this August to get the project back on track.
