Three armed men shot dead a petrol pump attendant in Greater Noida’s udyog Vihar when he tried to resist a robbery attempt on Sunday, police said.
On Monday, petrol pump owners closed their pumps for four hours in protest.
The owners also held a meeting and decided pumps would remain open only till 5pm if authorities did not provide adequate security.
About 10 pm on Sunday night, three motorcycle-borne men asked an attendant at Dolly Motors to fill petrol for Rs 100, said Hemender Singh, manager of the pump.
“Suddenly they snatched the gun from the guard Narender Kumar. One of our drivers, Ram Lakhan, challenged the robbers and caught hold of one of them,” he added.
One of the other miscreants then fired two shots at Lakhan and then fled towards Ghaziabad, Singh said.
The police took Lakhan to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Doctors said the bullet had pierced his heart.
“Their faces were covered so our staff could not identify them. The motorcycle was brand new and did not have a number plate,” said Singh.
“Two dealers told us a similar robbery attempt was made at Dadri petrol pump and Rs 5,000 was robbed a few hours before the men hit our pump,” said Singh.
Station Officer PK Sharma of the Bisrakh police station said an FIR has been lodged. Till late Monday, the assailants remained untraceable.
Petroleum Dealers’ Association Gautam Buddha Nagar, president, Dharam Veer Choudhary, told Hindustan Times. “We decided to keep petrol pumps in the district closed as a protest. We have also demanded compensation of Rs.5 lakh to Lakhan’s family. Till the district administration assures full protection, all petrol pumps in the district would function only from 10 am to 5 pm from Tuesday.”
Sub-divisional Magistrate Shaumaya Srivastava heard their grievances and assured them that their property and lives would be fully protected.
