Prime Minister Manmohan Singh congratulated the nation's defence scientists on Thursday for the successful launch of a new missile with a range of over 5,000 kilometres (3,100 miles).

"Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh congratulates scientists of the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) for the successful launch of Agni V," said a statement from his office.

The Prime Minister called DRDO chief Dr VK Saraswat to personally congratulate him and his team for the successful test launch of Agni V, his office said.

"Today's launch represents another milestone in our quest for our security, preparedness and to explore the frontiers of science," he said.

"The nation stands together in honouring the scientific community who have done the country proud."

He said the DRDO and other organisations have worked tirelessly in our endeavour to strengthen the defence and security of our country.
