In a major breakthrough, Delhi Police have arrested a close associate of Om Prakash alias Bunty, who is wanted in the cases of serial shootings reported from south Delhi over the past fortnight.
Zakir alias Nazir was picked up from a village near Etawah in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday by the south district police. The Commissioner of Police had declared a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head a few days ago.
Police said Zakir was a new entrant to Bunty's gang. His name first cropped up in September 2007 when he was arrested along with Bunty for trying to rob a petrol pump in Vasant Kunj area. Police had recovered a country made revolver and three live cartridges from his possession.
A team of Delhi Police had been camping in western Uttar Pradesh to arrest the gang members of Bunty. “This is an important catch. Zakir was picked up from a relative's house in Etawah district,” said a senior police officer.
Police said Zakir would be brought to Delhi for interrogation on Sunday. The other three wanted persons are Rajesh, Mohammad Israel and Shiv Om. Several teams including the Crime Branch and Special Cell of Delhi Police have been pressed into action to arrest Bunty and his gang members.
The biker gang had unleashed a streak of terror in south Delhi; killing three people in a span of a week and critically injuring two others. The gang had first struck at Sangam Vihar on July 5, robbing and killing a property dealer — Gurmeet Singh. On July 11, the gang struck at Amar Colony and killed two friends — Ashneet and Hardeep Singh. Within a few minutes after that they killed scooterist Sanjeev Suri at Andrews Ganj when he tried to stop them from robbing a motorcycle. A day later, they struck at a shop in Madangir injuring two businessmen Pawan and Naresh Garg.
