A temporary attendant of a parking lot has been arrested, along with three others, for helping a gang of vehicle thieves. One of the arrested is a constable with Haryana police who had bought a stolen car from the gang.
Police said the gang used to steal vehicles from parking lots in Janakpuri, Vasant Kunj and Model Town. They had sold a Maruti swift dzire, stolen from the parking lot of Janakpuri District Centre, to the policeman.
"We were investigating a case of car theft from the parking lot of District Centre on March 18. Since the police had recently installed CCTV cameras there, we started scanning the footage. Our teams also interrogated all the parking attendants," said additional commissioner of police (west) V Renganathan said.
On interrogation of parking attendants, one Mani Shankar, who worked in the parking lot temporarily, was questioned.
"Further CCTV footage revealed that three young boys had stolen the car using the car keys; this indicated involvement of parking attendants," Renganathan added.
Mani Shankar told the police that Santosh, Somesh Kumar and Santanu were the three boys in the CCTV footage. The police team raided different places and on Thursday arrested Santosh and Somesh Kumar from Kailash Puri.
They told the police that they sold the car to Manoj Kumar, a constable in Haryana Police. He is currently posted in City police station in Gurgaon. "Somesh had worked for Manoj as his driver. Though Manoj knew it was a stolen car, he got fake papers of the care made in his wife's name," the ACP added.
A separate team conducted raid in Gurgaon and arrested Manoj Kumar from Sector 18 and recovered the car. Santanu is still on the run.
