Investigators are close to unraveling the mystery surrounding the death of a 30-year-old cab driver who was found bleeding on the infamous Nelson Mandela Marg in south Delhi early on Thursday.
Sources claim that the nature of injuries inflicted on the burly Sandeep Kumar suggest that his killers were known to him. They also ruled out robbery as a motive behind the incident.
"Not only was his vehicle recovered from near the spot, his watch, mobile phone and wallet were intact. His post-mortem revealed several injuries on the body, which, given his size, are understood to have resulted from brawling with two to three persons," said a senior police officer.
Hailing from Noida's Salarpur Village and father to a three-year-old son, Kumar was staying in a rented accommodation in the Basant Gaon area and had dropped two women to their homes in Munirka, prior to being found with a fatal head injury around 3:10am.
After having been dropped to her home, one of the women had called on Kumar's mobile phone to ensure whether or not he had reached his residence safely. The call was attended by a police officer who had rushed Kumar to Safdurjung Hospital.
"Not only had the women hired him, but they had also witnessed him talking to the driver and co-passenger of a white car. According to them, the men had initially sought directions but had soon begun quarrelling with him," the officer said.
The passengers were two of Kumar's usual customers whom he used to pick and drop to a Gurgaon mall, where they work. Police have zeroed-in on some of Kumar's acquaintances, two of who had recently fallen out with him, as suspects in the case.
"Investigations are underway and on track. We will crack the case at the earliest," said Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south).
