A day after the building collapse incident claimed four lives and left two injured, the west Delhi police have arrested two persons, including one of the owners of Metro restaurant, where the illegal construction was being carried out.
Tarun Chawla, one of the owners of the restaurant and Devender Kalra, a contractor-cum-builder, were arrested on Sunday afternoon. Restaurant co-owner Dayal Chawla, and three others have been named in the FIR and are still evading arrest, police said.
“They had dug far below permitted levels for a basement, which damaged the foundation of the adjacent four-storey building and led to the collapse,” a senior police officer said.
No action was taken against the accused by the MCD even though the locals had informed its officers about the unauthorised construction that had begun four days prior to the incident.
Rishipal, additional DCP (west) said efforts are on to nab the other absconding accused. “Raids are being conducted to apprehend them,” he said.
Also, police have now registered the case under IPC section 304 (culpable homicide) following protests outside Uttam Nagar police station Saturday night. Initially, they had registered a case under section 304A (causing death by negligence).
Several local residents along with the relatives and family members of the victims blocked traffic for at least half an hour. They also damaged a few vehicles and raised slogans against the Delhi Police. They were alleging that the local police was trying to shield the accused.
